NCUR at UW-L week of April 8 showcases national, international students’ talent

 
Students reading, international students performing and artwork. A full week of events is planned at UW-L in conjunction with the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR). Undergraduates from 48 states and seven countries will present their research findings Thursday through Saturday, April 11-13. Food and culture from around the world will highlight the 48th Annual International Banquet Tuesday evening, April 9. And artwork from 36 college students around the country will be displayed Wednesday, April 10, through Saturday, April 13. UW-L program explores children’s literature related to Native Americans

A campus program will explore children’s literature related to Native American culture, tradition, community and racism. Thomas Peacock will present “What We Should Know about Native People: A Writer’s Perspective” to local educators, students and others Tuesday and Wednesday, April 16 and 17. Read more »

UW-L Theatre presents a children’s story for all ages

Mouse with purse. UW-L’s Department of Theatre Arts production “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” engages young minds in an upbeat, colorful and cherished story adapted onto the stage by Kevin Kling. Kevin Henkes’ beloved children’s story character, Lilly, seeks out adventure and learns an essential life lesson on the way. “Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse” will show at 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. Saturday April 13, in the Frederick Theatre in the lower level of Morris Hall. Read more »

UW-L to host ‘Leave No Trace’ training

Leave No Trace logo. UW-L’s Outdoor Connection will host the Subaru Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer Course April 27- 28. Leave No Trace is a conservation practice that promotes sustainable outdoor recreational practices benefiting people and the environment. The two-day course consists of 16 hours of programing; 10 in the field and six in a classroom. Read more »

Iowa native who gained Internet attention for talking about his two moms to speak at UW-La Crosse

An Iowa college student who had video of him appearing before state officials talking about his two moms go viral will speak at UW-La Crosse. Zach Wahls will share his views on marriage rights at 7:30 p.m. Monday, April 15, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Read more »

Graduate students to visit German universities to discuss student affairs administration

German flag. UW-L graduate students will travel to three different German universities to meet with German students and administrators to explore varying approaches to student affairs in German higher education. Typically Germany universities are less involved in student affairs. Read more »

UW System Board of Regents met at UW-L April 4 and 5

University Bookstore to host Thirst Project School Tour April 10

The University Bookstore is hosting the Thirst Project School Tour at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, in 337 Cartwright Center. The Thirst Project is a nonprofit organization working to raise awareness about the global water crisis – a problem that affects more than one billion people. Thirst helps build water wells around the world to generate and promote access to clean drinking water. To learn more about the Thirst Project visit www.thirstproject.org or contact Carlena Goddeau at 608-785-8855.

Grizzly Bear is featured band at April 12 Album Encounters; ‘Saturn — Jewel of the Heavens’ is April public program

The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show will feature Grizzly Bear's "Shields"  at 8 p.m. Friday, April 12, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $4. The Planetarium’s Public Program for April is “Saturn — Jewel of the Heavens.” The talk followed by a multimedia audiovisual presentation will be at 1 p.m. Saturdays, April 13, 20 and 27. Admission is $2 for students and children and $4 for others. Freedom Fest ticket presale pricing discount ends  Saturday, April 13

Take advantage of presale pricing discounts for Freedom Fest. Purchase tickets for $35 (plus tax) at local Festival Foods through Saturday, April 13. The special presale discount is also available online at www.freedomfestlacrosse.com.

This year’s event is Saturday, June 15 at the UW-La Crosse Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The sixth annual event will feature performances by Chicago and Daughtry, in addition to sets from The Remainders and the 451st Army Band. One hundred percent of Freedom Fest proceeds benefit the UW-L's Hall of Honor and a scholarship fund for service members who attend UW System schools.

Lawn seating tickets are available for $65. VIP tickets are $145 and $195 for Front Rows VIP. VIP ticket holders receive free food and drinks in the VIP tent throughout the day. Admission tickets go up to $45 after April 13. Logistics Health Inc. is the sponsor of the fest for the sixth year.

Campus Child Center music show set for April 15 and 16; art on display April 15-18

The Campus Child Center will celebrate the Week of the Young Child by hosting its Annual Music and Art Show. Musical performances will be held at 11 a.m. in the Recreational Eagle Center lobby Monday, April 15, and Tuesday, April 16. Children's artwork will be on display in the REC lobby April 15-18.

UW-L surplus sale runs through April 15

UW-L is conducting a sale of surplus property in partnership with the online auction site www.wisconsinsurplus.com through April 15. Pre-registration and a bidder number is required prior to any bid submittals. For terms and conditions of sale and contact information go to www.wisconsinsurplus.com.

Cancer Chemoprevention is topic of April 15 bioresearch forum

Doctor Howard Bailey, Department of Medicine UW-Madisonis the keynote speaker for the April La Crosse BioResearch Forum. He speaks on “Cancer Chemprevention" from 12:15-1 p.m. Monday, April 15, in the Overholt Auditorium at Gundersen Lutheran. The free forums are open to the public and hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

Information Technology Services to host campus electronic waste recycling drop off site, pick up April 22

Information Technology Services is hosting an electronic waste (e-waste) dropoff site for the campus community from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Hoeschler Tower Monday, April 22, in honor of Earth Day. Only “electronic items” such as computers, keyboards, monitors, printers, CD/DVD players, VCRs and TVs will be accepted. Other types of household appliances will not be collected.  ITS staff will be available to assist with receiving and sorting. An e-waste pickup is available to departments for university-owned equipment only. Submit an online order for pick up of university-owned equipment at www.uwlax.edu/its/helpdesk/electronic_surplus.htm. E-waste disposal keeps the campus environmentally clean and clutter free. Items are disposed of in an environmentally-responsible manner by the locally-owned, certified contractor Dynamic Recycling. The contractor ensures that hard drives are erased so disposal is secure. Results of Centennial Hall thermal comfort survey now online

As part of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification process, UW-L Facilities Planning and Management conducted a thermal comfort survey in Centennial Hall through Feb. 19. LEED, as it’s commonly known, is a points-based third party verified green building certification process created and managed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC).  UW-L received LEED Gold Certification in Centennial Hall.
The survey measured satisfaction with temperature, humidity and air flow. Survey results and corrective action plan are available at www.uwlax.edu/fpm/sustainability/initiatives/LEED_thermal_comfort_survey.htm.
Note that the survey was not designed to identify thermal comfort concerns in a specific room. Share specific thermal comfort concerns by contacting the Facilities Management Office at 785.8585 or submit an online work request through https://iservicedesk.uwlax.edu/. The Facilities Management office hours are Monday through Friday from 6:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., and is closed on legal holidays. For emergency facilities service outside these hours contact University Switchboard at 785.8000.

OCW seeks nominations for steering committee

UW-L's Organization for Campus Women (OCW) holds elections each spring, as terms expire or individuals resign, for campus representatives. Representatives serve three-year terms. For spring 2013, the nominating committee is accepting nominations from the campus to fill the following positions:
  • Classified staff representative: two positions
  • Academic staff representative: three positions
  • Faculty representative: one position
To become involved with the Organization for Campus Women and be considered for nomination to the above positions, contact OCW Elections Chair Melissa Bingham at mbingham@uwlax.edu by Monday, April 15.

Spring symposium to be held April 10

"Seeking Meaning, Finding Purpose" is the theme for the 2013 Spring Symposium sponsored by the OCW.  The event will be held from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, April 10, Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.
