What’s Happening In Dining Services
The scoop on sugar
— By Registered Dietitian Katie Callahan The average American eats almost 100 pounds a year of added sweeteners. This equates to almost a quarter pound of empty calories from sugar and other sweeteners a day. It’s easy to quickly consume a lot of calories from added sugars. Extra calories from sugar can lead to weight gain, obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and certain cancers. Added sugars in foods can increase triglyceride levels and blood pressure, which raises the risk for heart disease. People who consume a large amount of added sugars have reduced intake of calcium, vitamin A, iron, zinc and fiber. Sugar is added into products such as baked goods, ice cream, candy, jellies, fruit drinks and soda. Some other foods may not be as obvious. Be careful with products such as breakfast cereals, granola bars, bagels, pasta sauces, instant oatmeal, yogurt and coffee drinks as they generally contain added sugar. This is where the skill of reading nutrition labels can really come in handy! Save items with added sugars for special occasions. When you happen to get a little bit of a sweet tooth, reach for naturally sweet items, such as fruit and dark chocolate, if possible. Why reach for added sugar products when you can enjoy products that are sweet (and delicious) to begin with?
