The FurLow Riders roll into fourth year of rock music

The FurLow Riders performing at Root Note. August commemorates four years for The FurLow Riders. With four upcoming gigs this fall, the university blues-rock band led by UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow, hasn’t slowed down. Gow encourages faculty, staff and students to join them for shows, which promise more of the classic rock and blues music Gow played on the stage about 20 years ago along with other roots music featuring various members of the band. Read more

This year’s venue for All-University Address is Valhalla; address, picnic set for Aug. 28

UW-L Chancellor Joe Gow[/caption] Chancellor Joe Gow will give UW-L’s All-University Fall Address from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 28, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. That’s a change from Graff Main Hall where he has traditionally given the address. Refreshments are available beginning 10 a.m. Immediately following the address, all university faculty and staff are invited to attend the Annual Chancellor’s Picnic from approximately 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. on the Graff Main Hall south lawn. The rain site is the Galley and the State and Ward rooms in Cartwright Center. The event is free. Tickets and sign-up are not required. The menu includes grilled chicken breasts, vegan burgers, hamburgers, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans, an ice cream sundae bar and beverages. UW-L Dining Services will serve the food.

Scouping ice cream. Ice (S)cream Social to be held Aug. 28

Meet and welcome international students to campus at the Office of International Education Ice (S)cream Social. Ice cream will be served from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at the Lindner Forest Gazebo, north of Wing Technology Center. The Screaming Eagles Marching Band will perform. The rain site is the State Room in Cartwright Center.

La Crosse Friends of International Students group seeks new Friendship Families

Become a Friendship Family through La Crosse Friends of International Students (LFIS).  LFIS  Friendship Families help promote cross-cultural understanding by fostering relationships between international students and La Crosse area residents. Students do not live with friendship families. Background checks are required for friendship family participants; however, UW-L employees do not need to pay for their background check. Jeans Day artwork.Participate in Jeans Day Aug. 30; wear LIVEMAROON gear

UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar, participants may wear jeans. Campus participants should wear LIVEMAROON gear.  The next Jeans Day is Friday, Aug. 30. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. This is a small way to join together and give back big to the local community. In July UW-L raised $53. The charities receiving the August contributions are the Steppin’ Out in Pink and National Alliance on Mental Illness. Building contacts:

Next passenger van training is Sept. 4; register by Aug. 29

The next  12/15 Passenger Van training is set for 8 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, in the Facilities Management Conference Room. The instructor and behind-the-wheel training will last no later than noon, depending on the number of participants. ATP artwork. Awareness through Performance shows slated for Sept. 2

Two Awareness through Performance (ATP) fall 2013 shows will be performed Monday, Sept. 2. The 1:30 and 3:30 p.m. shows will be held in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The free shows are open to the public. ATP is an alternative outlet for social activism on campus. The troupe is comprised of students who share a passion for diversity and social justice issues and want to explore how these issues shape the world. Participants hope to positively impact the campus climate by affecting attitudes and behaviors and enhancing cross-cultural awareness. Purchase the “University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Daily Planner & Handbook” publication for the 2013-2014 academic year for $5 (includes tax) at the Information Counter on the first floor in Cartwright Center. In addition to the daily planning pages, the campus planner includes information on dining; Campus Activities Board, music and theatre events; athletic schedules; coupons; and more. Information Counter hours are:

Office supply distribution to change Sept. 3

To improve mail delivery, increase distribution efficiency, and maintain consistent delivery points, beginning Tuesday, Sept. 3, office supply orders will be distributed with the regular mail, and parcels will be delivered to the appropriate mail room or single point receiving location in each building. Ensure recipient's name, building/department name and room number are clearly visible on orders. Pick up office supply packages when picking up regular mail and parcels. Learn how to use DigiCOPY, UW-L’s provider of copying and printing services, during training sessions Friday, Sept. 20. DigiCOPY representatives will be on campus for a series of instructional sessions including what products and services are available, how to set up an account and how to place orders over the Web. Introductory and advanced presentations will be held in 31 Wing Technology Center. Beginner sessions will be an hour long and held at 9:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., while intermediate training will last a half hour and be held at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m.  Time will also be available for the campus community to drop in for one-on-one assistance. Electricians are finishing a project that started last year to replace all the walkway lights with LED's ... They say a big reason is for safety ... (video clip) "Gerrard picked to lead UW-L Foundation," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 21. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation has picked Mary Ann Gerrard as its next president, according to a release today from the university. Gerrard served as a chancellor's assistant for UW Colleges and Extension before being chosen to replace Foundation president Al Trapp, who retires Sept. 9 ... "UW-La Crosse Foundation names new president," WXOW-TV, Aug. 21. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Foundation has a new president. Mary Ann Gerrard will assume the duties of the Foundation's president starting Monday, September 9th ... "President of Minneapolis Fed to speak at UW-L," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 21. The president of the Federal Reserve Bank in Minneapolis will be in La Crosse next month to meet with business leaders and speak to the public as part of an effort to explain the Fed's role and collect information that could help shape the nation's monetary policy ... Remembering artwork. UW-L Professor Emeritus Hugh Boyle  died Aug. 1. Boyle taught history at UW-L for 19 years and retired in 1987. Prior to working at UW-L he taught at Knox College in Illinois and North Dakota State University.
