'Stereotype threat' is focus of Aug. 27 keynote presentation

[caption id="attachment_25881" align="alignnone" width="614"]Speaker at front of crowded room talking. Keynote speaker Valerie Purdie-Vaughns from Columbia University spoke to more than 200 faculty and staff Aug. 27 in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition at the 15th Annual UW-L Conference on Teaching and Learning.[/caption] Stereotypes matter, according Valerie Purdie-Vaughns from Columbia University who was the keynote speaker Aug. 27 at UW-L's 15th Annual UW-L Conference on Teaching and Learning in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Based on her research about "stereotype threat" there is a tendency for students to underperform academically when they believe that their performance may confirm a negative stereotype about them. She spoke to more than 200 faculty and staff  about the nature of achievement gaps among groups of students and strategies that educators can use to reduce gaps in student performance. Hundreds of studies demonstrate that some achievement gaps between groups of students are due to the negative effects of stereotype threat. Following her address, Purdie-Vaughns led a working session exploring strategies teachers can use to curtail the negative effects of stereotype threat and reduce long-standing achievement gaps among students.

Fifty years after the national March on Washington for Civil Rights, we can be proud of how as a society we have made movement towards a greater justice and inclusion, Washington says.
