2019 Volunteer Field Survey

2019 Volunteer Field Survey

Fifteen participants joined to survey some fields at the Norskedalen Heritage site and the DNR Fishery area on the east end of Coon Valley.  The weather was super. The fields still showed some effects from last year's major flooding episodes, with silt covering some of the ground and new channels having been cut into the fields. So we did not find much on the surface, but did find a beautiful knife along one of the eroded banks at Norskedalen, with a core of the same high-quality Prairie du Chien chert in a field nearby.  At the DNR property, we also found a few artifacts in a stream bank, and isolated flakes at two locations in adjacent agricultural fields. Norskedalen was hosting a flintknapping day at the Heritage site. Thanks to Jack Larson and his friends, MVAC's volunteers got to work with some of the regions' best knappers, see how the artifacts are made, and try it themselves. It was excellent to find some flakes, and then make some just like it. So, with beautiful weather and a great group of people, we had a very enjoyable day, and thanks to all the participants.
