Rape, assault is topic of March 12 discussion

Rates of rape and sexual assault are four times higher for female students aged 18-24 than for non-students in the age group.

These higher rates of victimization may reflect enduring gender inequalities that exist in higher education and society, say UW-L assistant professors Laurie Cooper Stoll, Sociology/Archaeology; and Terry Glenn Lilley, Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Cooper Stoll and Lilley will lead the discussion "Exploring UW-L Undergraduates' Attitudes Towards Rape and Sexual Assault" from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 12, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall.

Based on findings from a spring 2013 online survey UW-L undergraduate students took, the talk will explore ways gender-blind sexism continues to perpetuate an environment conducive to rape and sexual assault.

The discussion is sponsored by the Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Department. For more information, contact Mahruq Khan at mkhan@uwlax.edu.

Simplicity rules!

FACT: Uncluttered signage achieves greater success.

Ideally, your display design should consist of just four main components:
  1. A compelling photo and/or image
  2. The what, when, where and cost
  3. Event description (15 words or fewer)
  4. Program or department name with contact info and web address (Websites can be used to direct the audience to more detailed information)
Keep it SIMPLE. Remember, your audience has only seconds to notice and process your message. Don’t make it difficult by cramming your digital sign with too much information. Creative Services can assist campus programs and departments in designing effective signage. To schedule a meeting with Creative Services visit www.uwlax.edu/universityrelations/CreativeServices/CreativeServicesHome.htm for contact information. Kidneys are so important to good health, and everyone should be aware of how to protect them. If you have kidney disease, doing as much as you can to slow down the damage to your kidneys is very important as well. Here is a checklist of things you can do to help protect your kidneys: · See your doctor regularly, especially if you have diabetes or high blood pressure. · Keep your diabetes and blood pressure under control to try to help prevent kidney disease or slow it down. · Quit smoking. Smoking makes kidney disease get worse faster. · Work with your doctor and healthcare team. Tell them about any changes in your health. · Follow all medication and diet changes prescribed by your doctor. · Take an active role in your healthcare. Educate yourself about kidney disease and its treatments. Watch this column for tips and ideas to improve and maintain physical health.
