UW-La Crosse students to show artwork in downtown show

Twelve UW-La Crosse art students will share their work during an upcoming exhibit downtown La Crosse.

TV telethon to support Coulee Region Humane Society

It’s the 14th year UW-L students will help raise funds. Dogs, cats and other animals at the Coulee Region Humane Society will benefit from an upcoming live TV telethon produced by UW-La Crosse communication studies students.

UW-L’s Murphy Library sets book sale Nov. 14

UW-L’s Murphy Library will hold a fall book sale Wednesday-Friday, Nov. 14-16, in 270 Murphy Library. Sale hours are: 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 9 a.m.-noon Friday.

It Make$ Cents! program helps students with finances

College is hard, but paying for it, as well as making important financial decisions, can often make it much more stressful. The It Make$ Cents! financial literacy program has been created to assist students with these challenges. From 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, in Port O’ Call, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition, students are invited to participate in the It Make$ Cents! Price is Right Game Night!

UW-L endowment does what Lindy Shannon did: supports young musicians

The influence of a local music legend will live on thanks to an endowment established through the UW-La Crosse Foundation. In 1992, friends of La Crosse rock ‘n’ roll enthusiast Lindy Shannon organized a concert to honor the local icon who helped many budding musicians. With some of the profits, they created an endowed scholarship at UW-L in 1992 that’s awarded annually to music majors.

Winter is coming: UW-L’s Inclement Weather Plan

Here’s what you need to know about UW-L’s Inclement Weather Plan: UW-L implements its Inclement Weather Plan when conditions make travel dangerous or other events cause serious safety concerns.  During deteriorating weather conditions, it should be assumed that scheduled activities will continue unless an official announcement is made via University Communications and University Police.

University Police provide storage for weapons owned by students living on campus

Deer hunting season is here. With Wisconsin being an active hunting state, it’s no surprise some students attending UW-L hunt and need a place to store their weapons, says Scott Rohde, chief of UW-L University Police. There are rules against keeping weapons in residence halls, but they can be stored on campus.

OCW Cook-IE OFF fundraiser was a sweet success

Seven teams baked cookies to garner the “Golden Spatula” award and raised $475 for a student scholarship at this year’s Organization for Campus Women Cook-IE OFF fundraiser.

'Ordinary Heroes' theme of Self-Sufficiency Program’s eighth annual Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast

Seven Self-Sufficiency Program graduates were awarded $500 scholarships at the eighth annual Locally Grown Scholarship Breakfast Nov. 7 in UW-L’s Cleary Alumni & Friends Center. Established in 2003, the Locally Grown Scholarship Fund awards scholarships to SSP alumni at the beginning of their college careers. This year's scholarship winners, their field of study, school and goals include:
  • Lisa Bulman, Center for Adult Learning, Viterbo University. Her goal: To complete an associate’s degree and determine the next stage of academic and professional preparation in medical field.
  • Cassi Olson, Western Technical College. Her goal: to complete general education courses and complete the medical assistant program.
  • Susan Rose, Center for Adult Learning, Viterbo University. Her goal: to complete a degree and create a business that provides nurturing environments for children.
  • Ashley St. Sauver, Western Technical College. Her goal: to transfer to UW-L to major in English and psychology with a minor in digital photography.
  • Kaelyn St. Sauver, Business Management program, Western Technical College. Her goal: to complete an associate degree and enroll in a surgical technician program.
  • Sherri Swan, Women’s, Gender, Sexuality Studies Department, UW-L. Her goal: to complete degree and work with national or international NGO.
  • Sammy Xiong-Vu, Public Administration, UW-L. Her goal: to focus on discern career direction and complete undergraduate degree
This year’s keynote speaker, UW-L student-parent Susan Fabian, shared how ordinary heroes in the La Crosse community became her extraordinary heroes in her journey as a student at UW-L. Throughout the journey they were advocates and gave her the encouragement and the faith in herself she needed to succeed, she says. Fabian is majoring in Women, Gender, & Sexuality Studies with a minor in sociology. She hopes to graduate in December and then pursue a career in public service.

Open forums for assistant director of Network & Enterprise Services position scheduled for Nov. 13-16

The campus community is invited to attend open forums to review candidates for the assistant director of Network & Enterprise Services position. Forums are scheduled for Tuesday through Friday, Nov. 13-16.
Finalists will prepare a 10-minute presentation in response to the question “The position of assistant director of Network & Enterprise Services is important for the success of ITS and the campus. In the areas of networking, telecommunications, server infrastructure and enterprise development, tell us what areas are your specific strengths and why. Describe your management style and the methods you would employ to ensure your team and campus success.” There will be a 20-minute question-and-answer session after the presentation.

Luncheon artwork. Thanksgiving luncheon to be held Nov. 14; tickets on sale until Nov. 13

Those who want to attend UW-L’s annual “A Thanksgiving Gathering Feast” luncheon can purchase tickets until Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The luncheon will be held from 11:15 a.m.-12:45 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. The Thanksgiving buffet will include:
  • Carved roast turkey
  • Stuffing
  • Mashed potatoes with gravy
  • Green bean casserole
  • Cranberry walnut salad with vinaigrette dressing
  • Dinner rolls with butter
  • Traditional pumpkin pie
  • Coffee, ice water, milk or ice tea

Global history of Mexican food is topic of Nov. 13 lecture

A free public lecture, "Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food," will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 13, in 1309 Centennial Hall. The talk by Jeffrey Pilcher, a visiting scholar from University of Minnesota, is funded by the Provost Office's Visiting Scholar of Color Grant Program.

Area Research Center to celebrate 50 year anniversary Nov. 14

Murphy Library’s Area Research Center offers an expansive range of sources including rare book and Wisconsiana collections, an oral history collection, maps, photographs and university archives. The ARC has had 50 years of partnership with the Wisconsin Historical Society and the University of Wisconsin campuses. To commemorate the milestone, Murphy Library will host a celebration from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Murphy Library Special Collections and Area Research Center. The partnership, which originated in 1962, aims to create a network to preserve world-class historical collections and records, making them available to students and the public. The collections held in the ARC are non-circulating, meaning that anyone who wishes to use them for academic or personal use must register and provide positive identification before viewing them in the reading room – they may not be check out.

Geography & Earth Science Department hosting International GIS day Nov. 14

Learn about Geographic Information Science and enter drawing for prizes at the International GISday, "Discovering the WORLD through GIS," on Wednesday, Nov. 14. Information promoting GIS will be on display in the lobby of Cartwright Center from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Stop by the display and receive a GISday wristband or magnet. Students may enter drawings for prizes which include GISday jump drives and reusable cloth bags.

Great River Folk Festival party, concert and brainstorming session to be held Nov. 14

Brainstorming will follow a concert with a Great River Folk Festival flair. The festival was started by UW-L students, faculty and staff in the Music Department more than 30 years ago and is held on campus annually. A party and  concert by Don D. Harvey and the Ultrasonic Duo with special guest Brojo Roj  will be held from 6-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Three Rivers Waldorf School, 901 Caledonia St., La Crosse. Everyone is invited to the free event to brainstorm ideas about changes and improvements to make in the festival. Food and refreshments will be provided.  A guided brain storming discussion will follow the concert from 7-8:30 p.m.  Donations will be accepted. For more information contact Harvey at dondharvey@centurytel.net or 781.3456.

Sign up beginning Nov. 14 for UW-L's Vocal Jazz Ensembles Nov. 25 auditions

Auditions for openings in UW-L’s Vocal Jazz Ensembles for spring semester 2013 will be held from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 25, in Annett Recital Hall, Center for the Arts. Auditions are open to all UW-L students regardless of major. UW-L has three vocal jazz ensembles which perform at least two public concerts each semester. Auditions will be held in an “American Idol”-type format with: 1. singers performing a two- to three-minute jazz or popular standard solo of their own choosing. This solo may or may not be accompanied by a pianist. 2. singers performing their vocal part as a member of a vocal jazz quartet on an excerpt of a vocal jazz choral arrangement. Singers will receive this music when they sign up for the audition beginning Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Music Department Office, 234 Center for the Arts. UW-L art professor to give presentation at Gustavus Nov. 14

UW-L Art Professor Binod Shrestha will give a public lecture as part of a residency in the Gustavus Department of Art/Art History at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in the Art Lecture Hall on the upper level of the studio arts building of the Schaefer Fine Arts Center. The residency is funded through the Edgar and Ethel Johnson Endowment for the Arts at Gustavus. Shrestha’s lecture will focus on his work on the transitory nature of challenging political issues. UW-L is conducting another sale of surplus property in partnership with the on-line auction site www.wisconsinsurplus.com through Thursday, Nov. 15. Pre-registration and a bidder number is required prior to any bid submittals. Terms and conditions of sale, along with contact information are on the auction’s website.

Animality in James Joyce's 'Ulysses' to be discussed at Nov. 16 presentation

Adam Putz, English, will present "'Milk for the Pussens': Animality in James Joyce's Ulysses" from 2:30-3:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in 113 Wimberly Hall. " Putz will present findings from his research trip to Trinity College in Dublin, which was supported over the summer by the National Endowment for the Humanities and UWL's International Development Fund. His archival work at the college focused on the Royal Zoological Society in order to reconnect the configurations of animality in Ulysses to representations of poverty that begin but do not end with Bloom and his cat. Putz interrogates Joyce's investment in the larger project of not only blurring the boundaries between the city's built and natural environments, but also between its human and nonhuman inhabitants. The event is free and open to the public and is a presentation of the English Department's 2012-13 William J. and Yvonne Hyde Colloquium Series. Rush is featured band at Nov. 16 Album Encounters; public program ‘Cosmic Colors’ set for Saturdays throughout November

The Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show features Rush’s  ”2112” at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in 20 Cowley Hall. Admission is $4. The Planetarium’s Public November program is “Cosmic Colors.” It will be presented at 1 p.m. Saturdays Nov. 17 and 24.  Other monthly public programs are planned for December, February, March and April. Kitty Club social set for Dec. 5; RSVP due Nov. 28

UW-L's Kitty Club annual Holiday Social is at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, at Grizzly's Grill & Saloon, 3039 Medco Court (off Highway 16), Onalaska. The Kitty Club was established 67 years ago and hosts two annual events for current and retired classified female employees to meet one another and socialize together.
Those unable to attend the social, but who want to join, should contact Pat Clements at lements@uwlax.edu.  Annual dues are $5 and cover club expenses for the social, retirement gifts and costs such as mailings.

Career Services offers free practice tests for graduate and professional school entrance exams

Those applying to graduate or professional schools can prepare for entrance exams using UW-L Career Services' free practice tests.
Several practice tests are available for UW-L students to use in WISCareers. Practice tests include: AFOQT, AP, GMAT, GRE, LSAT, Miller Analogies and MCAT.
To access these tests, login to WISCareers at www.uwlax.edu/careerservices/students/careerexploration.htm. Login instructions are included on the page. Once logged in, go to  "Academic Test Prep" area on the right side of the page.

Take the inclusivity pledge and purchase T-shirts

UW-L continues to work to create a more unified campus community. One example is this fall’s all-campus inclusivity theme with “I am UW-L” banners displayed around campus.
The campus community can take an active role in campus inclusivity efforts by taking the inclusivity pledge at www.uwlax.edu/united.
Another way to show support for inclusion, empathy, respect and civility is by wearing inclusivity T-shirts. Short-sleeve T-shirts sell for $5. Long-sleeve T-shirts sell for $7. Purchase the shirts from any of the following people at these locations:

Artwork for Campus Kudos. Barrett Klein, Biology, published the new publication "Robots in the Service of Animal Behavior," as well as a thermal video that is a finalist in The Scientist for a Labby Award.  New Scientist covered the thermal research. Shelly R. Lesher, Physics, presented Lifetime Measurements in 160Gd" at the American Physical Society Division of Nuclear Physics Conference in Long Beach, Calif., on Oct. 26. UW-L undergraduate students Ran Ikeyama and Ian Marsh also presented posters at a special undergraduate session. Víctor M. Gary Walth, Music, presented "Setting the Tone for Successful Choral Rehearsals With Warm-ups That Work" at the Wisconsin State Music Teachers Conference in Madison Oct. 26. OCW food drive runs through Nov. 30

The Organization of Campus Women (OCW) is organizing a food drive for UW-L students from Monday, Nov. 12, through Friday, Nov. 30. There will be collection boxes labelled for the drive in various department offices in buildings all across campus. A collection spot will also be at the all campus Thanksgiving lunch Wednesday, Nov. 14. Non-perishable food items and hygiene products, such as shampoo, soap and toothpaste, are welcome.

 Free Conn Artist Organ with two manuals. Organ has two octave pedals, 10 couplers, and 23 voices with a speaker. Two church organists used this organ as a home practice instrument. Call 796.1546.
