UW-La Crosse’s 15th Annual Celebration of Student Research & Creativity from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 13, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition.

UW-La Crosse junior Kristin Zimmerman says Hickory trees could hold the future of antibiotics. With help from UW-L Microbiology Professor Mike Winfrey, Zimmerman has discovered the tree’s nuts and leaves have the potential to be used to fight increasingly resistant bacteria in the world today.
“It’s motivating to know my research directly helps others,” explains Zimmerman. “I hope to make a difference.”

The celebration, held during National Undergraduate Research Week, will include presentations from undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines. Students will present on diverse topics from how accurately films portray mental illness to the obstacles English language learners must overcome. The variety among students’ presentation topics reflects the variety of areas of study on campus, and the many directions students can take with the knowledge they learn in class.
Zimmerman will explain how her research shows promise for yielding a new drug at a time when bacteria are growing increasingly immune to drugs of past generations such as penicillin.
The Celebration of Student Research & Creativity gives UW-L students the opportunity to go beyond learning in the classroom and become actively involved in their field. It presents student research and creativity accomplishments, and also highlights the important role that faculty and academic staff play as mentors at UW-L.
The event encourages the spread of students’ scholarly work throughout the university and throughout the country. Last year 28 undergraduate students from UW-L continued on to the 2011 National Conference on Undergraduate Research in Ithaca, N.Y. Year after year, UW-L students continue to pursue their research with hard work and dedication, giving UW-L the recognition it has today for excellence in student research.

A jazz trio that received a grant from the Office of Undergraduate Research & Creativity will present their research through a performance following the exhibitions. The three students, mentored by UW-L music professor Karyn Quinn, created the project “The Bill Evans Trio: A Stylistic Analysis and Application.”Copies of their recordings will be available for checkout from the UW-L Music Library. “As future professional musicians, these studies are going to contribute immensely to how we play,” says UW-L Senior Dan Collins, a member of the trio.
