This week's news and events.

Dumpster Diversion diverts a lot

GarbageWeb-1The La Crosse County landfill will see a lot less furniture — and neighborhoods around campus look a lot less junky — all thanks to the university’s Move Out Sustainability Team. Over two weekends earlier this month, MOST held the Dumpster Diversion — setting up drop-off sites in the campus area for students. The event was an enormous success, says Andrew Londre, co-founder of MOST and County Board Supervisor. Read more

Freedom Fest set to honor Marine Corps Wounded Warriors from Wisconsin

The inspirational stories of five wounded warriors from Wisconsin will be featured during Freedom Fest June 15, thanks to assistance from officials with the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment (WWR). Freedom Fest is an annual event that attracts thousands to the Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex at UW-L for celebration and commemoration of veterans and service members. The WWR provides and facilitates non-medical assistance to wounded, ill and injured (WII) marines and sailors, attached to or in support of marine units, and their family members. Headquartered in Virginia, the WWR provides non-medical care and support throughout the service member's recovery, aiming to ensure all WII marines get all of the benefits they are entitled. “The majority of these Marines have joined during a time of war, so they knew they could die, but they went forward anyway. These are incredible, incredible people who have volunteered their life or something higher than their life,” says Gunnery Sergeant Michael Gillitzer, district injured support coordinator with the Marine Corps Wounded Warrior Regiment. Freedom Fest tickets are available at www.FreedomFestLaCrosse.com or any local Festival Foods location.

Participate in Jeans Day May 31

Wear LIVEMAROON gear

UW-L is one of many local organizations to participate in the monthly “Jeans Day,” sponsored by the La Crosse Tribune. One or two local charities or organizations are designated each month to receive donations. In return for a one dollar (suggested donation), participants have the privilege of wearing jeans. The next Jeans Day is Friday, May 31. Donations are welcome even if you don’t wear jeans. You're also encouraged to wear LIVEMAROON gear or other maroon clothing. This is a small way to join together and give back big to the local community. In April UW-L raised $95. The charities receiving the March contributions are the United Fund for the Arts and RSVP. UW-L in the news

A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "Gow: Less money for UW could mean more pay freezes, higher tuition later," La Crosse Tribune, May 17. Backpedaling on budget plans for University of Wisconsin campuses might mean more pay freezes or heftier tuition hikes later, University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow said Thursday... "UW-La Crosse chancellor was hoping for tuition increase," WXOW-TV, May 17. The UW-La Crosse Chancellor says he was hoping for a slight tuition increase. Joe Gow says that increase would help enhance compensation for faculty and staff. Gow says they haven't had an increase in five years and he says their salaries are 18 percent behind peers at other institutions... (video clip) "Extraordinary: UW-L student battling virulent cancer honored at commencement," La Crosse Tribune, May 20. Chancellor Joe Gow choked up. Tears streamed down the faces of people in Kim Graham's cheering section. And Graham was crying a little bit, too. But when the UW-La Crosse student received her extraordinary degree, her smile outshone everything else -- her tears and her cancer... "UW-L awards extraordinary graduate," WXOW-TV, May 19. Putting on the cap and gown is the culmination of years of class studying and exams, but for Kimberly Graham the road to graduation involved much more. "I got diagnosed with cancer senior year of high school," Kimberly said. "I still was able to do online class through all of my cancer treatments and I was able to come to La Crosse after I finished"... (video clip) UW-L campus gears up for national track and field meet May 21, 2013 Track Town, U.S.A. is already trademarked. But La Crosse might want to think about locking up a Wisconsin version. Long known for hosting the WIAA State Track and Field Meet, the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse will be home to another major track and field spectacle this week — the NCAA Division 3 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
