She was one of UW-L’s international students to perform in front of a crowd reaching 300 people at the 49th International Banquet Friday, April 11, at Cartwright Center. “I love to share traditional Chinese culture — especially for the big events, such as the international banquet,” says Zheng, who performed a court dance from the Tang Dynasty. The dance was one of many talents displayed during the banquet that combines diverse dance, music and food in celebration of the many cultures present at UW-L. UW-L’s international presence on campus will be getting more support in coming years, noted Jay Lokken, UW-L director of International Education. At the banquet, Lokken announced a new UW-L Foundation campaign to raise $100,000 to offer two new student scholarships — one for an international student and another for a study abroad student. In addition, OIE has an Ambassador’s Roundtable Fund, which helps defray expenses when the office sponsors guest speakers, delegations from partner universities and program providers. It also helps the office host visiting scholars, Fulbright recipients and parents of international students. Approximately 70 guests attended an award reception as part of the banquet. Students, staff and community members were recognized for their academic and professional achievement and support of internationalization. Contributions to OIE scholarships and the ambassador roundtable can be made on the UW-L Foundation website by clicking on “Give Now” and identifying where the contribution will be directed. Visit the OIE website for upcoming international events including Global Initiatives Week, November 7-14, 2014. Campus and community events will also be uploaded to the La Crosse Convention and Visitors Bureau website. View more photos of the banquet.
