31st annual Big Band Cabaret set
UW-La Crosse musicians and others will recapture the sights and sounds of the 1930s and 40s Swing era. Two 18-piece big bands from UWL will perform the music of Glenn Miller, Benny Goodman, Les Brown and more during the 31st annual Big Band Cabaret at 7:30 p.m. Friday, March 23, in the Bluffs, UWL Student Union.
The "Tuxedo Dance Orchestra" — the UWL Jazz Orchestra led by UWL Director of Jazz Studies Jeff Erickson — will be joined by a number of special guests during the performance. The spotlight will be on UWL Associate Professor of Music Tammy Fisher playing drums on Benny Goodman’s “Sing, Sing, Sing,” while clarinetist Josh Baker will be featured on Goodman’s “Let Dance.”
Recapturing the sounds of the Andrews Sisters on “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” and “Don’t Sit under the Apple Tree” will be the vocal trio of Riley Bowman, Jillian Hebert and Brynn Dutelle. Bowman will also sing on the original arrangements of Natalie Cole’s “L-O-V-E” and “Almost Like Being in Love.” The “Black Coat Jazz Band" — the UWL Jazz Ensemble — will also feature vocalist Brooke Granahan who will sing the classic, “Mack the Knife,” as well as a sizzling cha-cha, “Relax Max.”
In addition to big band favorites, both groups will perform a variety of dance styles including polkas, waltzes, cha chas and tangos. A large dance floor will be available. The concert is cabaret-style seating at tables with beverage service.
The suggested donation is $10 for students, $15 for others, and $30 for patrons. Proceeds fund music scholarships. For tickets call the Music Department at 608.785.8415 during regular business hours. Tickets will also be available at the door, but reservations are recommended.
