Blue Cup Coffee officially opened June 4 inside Common Ground Campus Ministry at Pine and 14th streets on the UW-La Crosse campus. Kim Granum, owner, says she has been approached numerous times to expand her business to nearby cities of Onalaska and West Salem, but a move never felt right. However, when Pastor Paul Petersen of Lutheran Campus Ministry approached her with the idea of coming to UW-L, Granum, a 1986 UW-L alumna, knew it was a good fit. “I kind of got goose bumps,” says Granum. “ I am a UW-L alum. I was a gymnast there. I feel like I have strong ties to the university. It’s where I grew up and I’ve been wanting to expand.” Seating areaThe UW-L location will have a full coffee bar including espresso, brewed coffee, blended coffees and fruit smoothies. It will also offer some bakery, lunch and snack items. Granum anticipates food offerings to expand during the school year depending on demand. Granum says this is the first expansion of the Holmen business, and she is excited to see how business goes on campus. The Holmen location, 500 N. Holmen drive, has grown over 10 years and even survived an economic recession, notes Granum. It has 45 menu items including soup and quiche made from scratch. Granum takes pride in offering food prepared fresh daily as well as healthy options. Blue Cup Coffee’s campus location is open to the general public. Summer hours are 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. During the school year, hours will extend until 10 p.m. or later. Blue Cup Coffee is located on the first floor of Common Ground Campus Ministry, the new home for campus ministry, which was dedicated May 5. The building is a cooperative venture of the Lutheran Campus Ministry of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, and Crossroads United Campus Ministry that represents the United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Episcopal Church, American Baptist Church and United Church of Christ. Along with serving UW-L students, the center will reach out to those from Western Technical College and Viterbo University.
