The start of a new school year brings a busy schedule of classes, meetings and events. Note these guidelines from Records & Registration and University Reservations to help ensure that scheduled/reserved spaces are available and not doublebooked:- Records and Registration manages classroom scheduling outside of WINGS. As of Aug. 1 for fall classes and Dec. 1 for spring classes, WINGS should not be used to make classroom changes. Instead, contact Nancy Jones, Records and Registration, at njones@uwlax.edu for class scheduling additions/changes. WINGS does not show event reservations, so it can’t be used as a guide for available rooms.
- Do not move into a different room without consulting with Records and Registration. Spaces on campus are tightly scheduled and this will cause numerous problems. If a classroom is changed without going through official channels, a group that has properly scheduled/reserved the space has the priority.
- All classrooms have a permanent standard setup. If any modification must be made to accommodate class needs, return the furniture to the standard setup. Chairs and desks should not be taken from other rooms. If there aren't enough seats, contact Jones for assistance.
- University Reservations Office staff will begin reserving spaces for review sessions or other events that fall outside of academic class scheduling Monday, Sept. 8. To make reservations email reservations@uwlax.edu or call 608.785.8895.

Up to three awards of $5,000 each will be made to individuals, programs, and/or units in recognition of their exceptional efforts in fostering greater equity and diversity across their institutions and communities. A new video content management and creation tool, MyMedia, formerly My Mediasite, is now available to UW-L students, staff and faculty. Users can create a MyMedia account and upload and manage videos. Here's how: Download the desktop recorder software from inside your account and create a video such as you’ll find here. You can manage and create content in the office, at home or on the go. Recording is easy using your desktop or laptop computer and even your mobile device. MYMedia is a great tool to “flip the classroom.” Record short videos to explain concepts or to further explain questions that arise. Prepare an entire lecture and share the link to cover the class meeting when you are at a conference. Have students create an account and prepare video presentations for classroom projects. The uses of the new MyMedia service are limited only by your imagination. Sign up for your account at mymedia.uwlax.edu. Explore this technology tool which can improve instruction and enhance student learning. More information and additional training videos are available here and at the ITS web page. Click here for a video message from Chief Information Officer Mohamed Elhindi.Parking Services to provide child car seat inspections
To ensure child car seats are properly installed schedule a free appointment to have the seat inspected. Parking and Transportation Services, in partnership with the Campus Child Center, is providing inspections for students, faculty, staff and community residents at not cost but appointments are required. Parking and Transportation Services Manager Victor Hill is a nationally-certified child passenger safety technician and has close to10 years of experience with child passenger safety. Hill will teach best practices for car seat installations and answer questions. “Parents want to know that their children are riding safe, and we’re excited to provide this free service to UW-L and our neighbors in the community,” Hill said. “Finding the right seat that fits your child, fits your vehicle, and is one you’ll use correctly every time can be a challenge.” To schedule an appointment contact Hill at 608.785.8056 or vhill@uwlax.edu.News and upcoming events

UW-L in the news
A summary of some of the stories about UW-La Crosse spotted in the news. "Building commission approves parking ramp expansion for UW-L," La Crosse Tribune, Aug. 7. The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse has a green light to add two levels to its new campus parking ramp ... "Freshman enrollment increases at UW-La Crosse despite population change," WXOW, August 10. Students will soon return to school, and according to one University Chancellor, despite a decline in high school population, freshman enrollment is up - which has presented both challenges and benefits. University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow said freshman enrollment is up by six students ... "U.S. Army approves continuation of UW-La Crosse ROTC Program," WXOW, Aug. 11. UW-La Crosse's ROTC program has received approval from the U.S. Army to continue programs on campus. Last October, the U.S. Army nearly closed UW-La Crosse's Eagle Battalion ROTC Program due to a reduction in army services. The Army though decided a month later to put the Eagle Battalion on probation, as they created a new metric scale to help evaluate ROTC programs across the nation... "Report: Americans feel financial sting of recession," WKBT La Crosse, Aug. 12. ... and say, 'I should be saving some more and cut back on my spending,'" University of Wisconsin-La Crosse economics professor Mike Haupert said. Exercise, depression and anxiety The word "exercise" may make you think of running laps around the gym. But exercise includes a wide range of activities that boost your activity level to help you feel better. Certainly running, lifting weights, playing basketball and other fitness activities that get your heart pumping can help. But so can gardening, washing your car or strolling around the block and other less intense activities. You don't have to do all your exercise at once either. Broaden how you think of exercise and find ways to fit activity into your routine. Add small amounts of physical activity throughout your day. For example, take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park a little farther away from your work to fit in a short walk. Or, if you live close to your job, bike to work. Studies indicate that exercise probably helps ease depression in a number of ways, including:- releasing feel-good brain chemicals that ease depression (neurotransmitters and endorphins)
- reducing immune system chemicals that worsen depression
- Increasing body temperature, which has calming effects
- Gain confidence. Meeting exercise goals or challenges, even small ones, can boost your self-confidence. Getting in shape can also make you feel better about your appearance.
- Take your mind off worries. Exercise is a distraction that can get you away from the cycle of negative thoughts that feed anxiety and depression.
- Get more social interaction. Exercise may give you the chance to meet or socialize with others. Just exchanging a friendly smile or greeting as you walk around your neighborhood can help your mood.
To campus for successful Employee Enrichment Day
The Employee Enrichment Day Committee would like to thank the university community for all its support on a rewarding, day-long event. It was wonderful to collaborate with administrators, faculty, academic and classified staff, and presenters who all worked together to provide such a successful event. Thank you to Sudexo and AFSCME Local 1449 for providing refreshments through the Events Promotions Request Committee Grant, and to the Classified Council and Academic Staff Council for providing funding for keynote speakers. Also, thanks to the Cartwright custodial staff for room set-ups and quick turn-arounds. Because of everyone’s help, it was a very enriching day. Plan now to attend next year! Our tentative date for the 2015 Employee Enrichment Day is Tuesday, July 21. The Employee Enrichment Day Committee- Amanda Goodenough
