Wilson appointed CEO at UW-Rock County, farewell reception set for Nov. 10

Carmen Wilson, Chancellor's Office Chief of Staff and Affirmative Action Officer, will be leaving UW-L to become the next campus executive officer/dean at the University of Wisconsin-Rock County. Wilson came to UW-L in 1996 as an instructional academic staff member in UW-L's psychology department. Several years later she moved into a tenure track line, earning tenure in 2004 and a promotion to full professor in 2007. In 2002, Wilson received the College of Liberal Studies Faculty Recognition of Excellence Award for Teaching. Wilson has also supported UW-L's diversity efforts, serving on campus climate survey committees, on UW-L's Equity Scorecard team, and most recently led the Inclusive Excellence implementation team.Wilson also served as Faculty Senate chair, accreditation liaison and assessment coordinator. In 2008, Wilson she joined the Chancellor's Office and transitioned into the role of the Chancellor's Office Chief of Staff and Affirmative Action Officer. Wilson will begin her role as CEO/dean at UW-Rock County Dec. 1 and will provide leadership in all aspects of UW-Rock County's campus operation, including academic programs, student affairs, enrollment management, faculty and staff development, finance, facilities, diversity and inclusion, marketing, fundraising, and government and community relations. An informal farewell reception is planned from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 10, in the Cameron Hall of Nations, Centennial Hall. "Carmen was an outstanding teacher," says Psychology Department Chair Betsy Levonian Morgan. "We enjoyed working together on several projects and wish her much success in her new role. Her skill set will be a good match for a new administrative challenge."

Prep for Success set for Oct. 11, Career Expo is Oct. 12

Prep for Success is set for 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11, in 1400 Centennial Hall. A panel of four employers will answer questions regarding Career Expo, business etiquette and social media. Career Services advisers will be available before and after the event to answer questions. Career Expo will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Real Food Challenge workshop to be held Oct. 12

Learn about just and sustainable food systems and brainstorm about how UW-L can implement the concepts. In honor of World Food Day, Oct. 16, and National Food Day, Oct. 24, Katie Blanchard of the Real Food Challenge will present a workshop at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, in 1309 Centennial Hall. Real Food Challenge is a group of college students and recent grads connecting other college students and empowering them to change their food system. Blanchard will also meet with groups and classes on Tuesday. A series of activities associated with food system change will be held in October. UW-L's Writing Center presents Magnetic Poetry SLAM! on Oct. 13

Craft poetry with magnetic words from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, at the Hoeschler Tower. UW-L's Writing Center staff  is hosting Magnetic Poetry SLAM! and will take pictures of poets with their poems and post them on the Writing Center's Facebook page. Go on the page and “like” the poem you like best. The top three poets with the most "likes" will receive a $15 gift card to Barnes & Noble.

Album Encounters multimedia light and laser show set for Oct. 14, program on the telescope runs through Oct. 29

Creative approaches to maintaining zinc homeostasis is topic of Oct. 17 La Crosse BioResearch Forum

Scott E. Gabriel, Viterbo University Chemistry Department,  will discuss creative approaches to maintaining zinc homeostasis from 12:15-1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, for the monthly La Crosse BioResearch Forum. Forums are held monthly in the Overholt Auditorium, Gundersen Lutheran. Forums are free and open to the public and are hosted by the Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders and the Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation. Download a 2011 La Crosse BioResearch Forum schedule. Those attending should park in the Green ramp (see map) or use valet parking. Use the entrances at the north end and northeast side of the medical center.

Enter work orders/requests online with new iServiceDesk program, training sessions to be held

Facilities Planning and Management has piloted the new program iServiceDesk for online entry of work orders or requests for all non-emergency maintenance requests. Some of the benefits include: • a simplified and quicker work order submission process • reduced paper consumption • the ability to track and follow your requests. The new system will send email messages upon receipt, acceptance and completion of work orders. • the ability to see the details of a work order after its completion. Once a work order is completed and audited, you will be able to see the charges that were applied to it. •  the ability to query and see all work orders and requests for a specific building and time period. iServiceDesk is available to faculty and staff via this link on the Facilities Planning and Management website. All requests should be performed electronically, with the exception of  key requests, estimates and surplus pickups. Because of additional authorizations and internal routing needed, those requests will be managed as before. Facilities Planning and Management staff are working to develop an electronic submittal process for those requests as well. Alternative Spring Break trip to Dominican Republic planned, applications due Dec. 1

Christine Hippert, Sociology /Archaeology, and Peter Stovall, Educational Studies, are organizing an alternative Spring Break trip to the Dominican Republic March 10-18, 2012. Participants will work with Dominicans and migrant Haitians to learn about social, cultural, environmental and economic changes to life in Hispaniola from the era of colonization to the present. Excursions and service learning activities, include:

• Working on an organic farm
• Participating in a local reforesting project
• Touring historic and contemporary coffee and sugar plantations
• Sightseeing in the capital, Santo Domingo
• Visiting national parks by land and sea, including boating and swimming in the Caribbean

The estimated cost of the trip is $2,700 and includes airfare, land and sea transportation, hotels, one credit, all excursion costs and all except four meals. Students enroll in one credit of ANT 399 or INS 360 and can use financial aid toward the trip. The application deadline is Thursday, Dec. 1. The enrollment cap for the trip is 25 students, so apply soon. Find out more here.   Patricia Ardovino, Recreation Management/Therapeutic Recreation, presented "Teaching Leisure to Patients on a Forensic Unit for Criminal Offenders With Mental Illness" at the International Sociological Association Midterm Conference of Research on the Sociology of Leisure at the University of Palermo, Sicily, on Sept. 30. The presentation was co-authored by UW-L alum Jenny Fahey. Matt Cashion, English. A short film, "Last Words of the Holy Ghost," adapted from his short story (first published in Willow Springs No. 63), was screened as part of the Driftless Film Festival, Oct. 7, in Viroqua, and Oct. 9, in Mineral Point.  The film premiered at the LA Shorts Film Festival July 27. It has also appeared at the Austin Film Festival, the Coney Island Film Festival, and the Lucerne International Film Festival. Cashion's poem "At the Dead End of a Dirt Road" won first place for "best connection" in the project "Exposure: Words From Images," coordinated by the Pumphouse Regional Arts Center in La Crosse. Twenty-five writers were each paired with a photographer and were asked to respond to an image supplied by a photographer. The exhibit, showcasing work of each writer and photographer, will be on display at the La Crosse Public Library until Nov. 28 Jin Young Chung, Recreation Management/Therapeutic Recreation, co-authored "Influence of Interactive Thematic Maps on Tourist Perceptions: a Network Analysis." It was published in the October 2011 Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Technology. Lalita Hogan, English, published the book chapter "At the Margins of Family Life: Abjection and Purification in Rabindranath Tagore's Binodini" in "The Poet and His World: Critical Essays on Rabindranath Tagore," edited by Mohammad A Quayum, Orient Blackswan Press, 2011, 206-232. Gary L. Willhite, Educational Studies, was awarded an $11,700 grant from the Academy of Applied Science to support high school researchers in the Western Wisconsin — Upper Michigan Junior Science and Humanities Regional Symposium at Eagle Bluff Environmental Center, Lanesboro, Minn., Jan. 8-10, 2012.

Eighth annual UW-La Crosse Health/Financial Fair set for Oct. 13

In conjunction with the annual “It’s Your Choice” open enrollment period from Oct. 4-28, Human Resources is hosting the eighth annual UW-La Crosse Health/Financial Fair. The fair runs from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, in Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition New this year is E-benefits, an opportunity to make benefit elections online through the employee's portal. Two individuals from UW System will be available to assist with online benefit submissions and answer questions. Open enrollment opportunities are available for Health, Vision, Dental, Epic Benefits Plus and the Employee Reimbursement Account (ERA).  The ERA enrollment is not available through your portal for E-benefits. Representatives from most benefit vendors, including Social Security, will be available to answer questions regarding benefit plans. Additionally, there will be informational booths from Gundersen Lutheran and Health Tradition, along with vendors from all of the Tax Sheltered Annuity 403(b) programs and the Deferred Compensation Program.
