UWL to welcome new students during nine days in June

New, first-year UWL students will be on campus during nine days in June for Student Advising, Registration and Transition (START). Students will come June 13, 15, 16, 17, 20, 21, 22, 24 and 27. During START, students receive academic advising, register for courses, learn what it means to be a UWL student and more. Nearly 230 students are expected each day, as well as their family members. Faculty and staff can help by directing anyone who looks lost and remembering that a smiling face can make a big difference for a student who is new to campus, says Kara Koerner, UWL admissions counselor. “For some students, this is their first experience on a college campus, and they can feel very nervous in this unknown territory,” she says. “A smile goes a long way.” June registration for new students used to be called Freshmen Registration and Family Orientation. The name change to START this year reflects some major changes to the event that began in June 2015. Those changes aim to better equip new students with the transition to UWL in the fall. Major changes include having students register themselves for classes using UWL’s online course registration system so they are familiar with it when they register again in fall for spring courses. Prior to 2015, the Records and Registration Office registered new students for the courses they selected. Other major changes include offering a consistent advising experience for all students and employing “Eagle Guides,” current UWL student mentors, to help new students learn about what it means to be a UWL student. The new name START reflects all of these components: Student Advising, Registration and Transition. Learn more at www.uwlax.edu/start.
