Chunkey Stone

Chunkey Stone Donated

Special thanks to David Torgerson, one of the collectors at this year’s Artifact Show, who donated this chunkey stone to MVAC. It was found in a cornfield in the Stoddard, Wisconsin, area in the 1960s. Chunkey stones are the only clearly recognized game piece that have been recovered from La Crosse area archaeological sites. The game of chunkey was still being played when the first Europeans arrived in the Midwest. As a chunkey stone was rolled along the ground, players threw spearlike sticks where the stone would finally stop. The competition was intense.  The stone is now on display at the MVAC Lab on the UWL campus.  Hours and map at: https://www.uwlax.edu/mvac/contact/
