Posted 3:07 p.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010

UW-L's Economics of Sustainability class traveled to Milwaukee March 6 to tour and volunteer at Growing Power, one of the first urban farms in the U.S. Growing Power gained national attention in the award-winning film “Food Fight.” See more at: http://growingpower.org/.   Growing Power was started by Will Allen, who appeared with First Lady Michelle Obama at the White House when she kicked off her childhood anti-obesity campaign. Allen will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 13, in UW-L’s Graff Main Hall Auditorium. See more about Growing Power founder Allen at  http://www.nytimes.com/2009/07/05/magazine/05allen-t.html. Background: Growing Power is a national nonprofit organization and land trust supporting people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food for people in all communities. Growing Power implements this mission by providing hands-on training, on-the-ground demonstration, outreach and technical assistance through the development of Community Food Systems that help people grow, process, market and distribute food in a sustainable manner.
