Prints explore cultural exchange

The first exhibition of the spring semester at UW-La Crosse features a unique cultural exchange between East and West. “China Changes Everything :: Made in Beijing” runs in the University Art Gallery Thursday, Jan. 25, through Saturday, Feb. 10. The exhibition opens with a free reception from 4-6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 25, in the gallery in Room 100, Center for the Arts, 333 N. 16th St. The reception and exhibition are free and open to the public. The exhibition is the product of a cultural exchange between Eastern and Western cultures. Through fine art print traditions and the sharing of technology, the exhibition showcases three recent editions by Lucy Skaer, Scottish sculptor; Hongwei Yang, print professor at the Central Academy of Fine Art in Beijing; and Elisabeth Meyer, print professor at Cornell University in Ithaca. The artists collaborated in Ithaca and Beijing on the premise of sharing traditional and new technological advances to best further the methods for producing fine art prints. Chinese artist and professor Yang worked with studios in Ithaca, while artists Meyer and Skaer worked with studios in Beijing. With the guidance of master printers, each produced distinct bodies of works. Different cultural ideas surrounding print media challenged each collaborator’s understanding of the medium and is reflected in their works. The cultural print-process exchange considers cultural differences and the possibilities afforded to cultural collaborators.
