Theatre to perform wild and raucous ride of politics, art and activism
The UWL Department of Theatre Arts will present “The Revolutionists” by Lauren Gunderson.
The satirical farce is both funny and poignant while portraying hilarious and loveable women trapped in a somber history. Performances run at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 3-4 and 9-11, and Sunday matinees at 2 o’clock Dec. 5 and 12 in Toland Theatre, Center for the Arts, 333 16th St. N.
“The Revolutionists” highlights four women who lose their heads in this irreverent, girl-powered comedy set during the French Revolution’s Reign of Terror. Playwright Olympe de Gouges, assassin Charlotte Corday, former queen (and fan of ribbons) Marie Antoinette, and Haitian rebel Marianne Angelle hang out, murder Marat, and try to beat back the extremist insanity in 1793 Paris. The grand and dream-tweaked comedy is about violence and legacy, art and activism, feminism and terrorism, compatriots and chosen sisters, and how people go about changing the world.
Tickets go on sale 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 29. Box office hours are 1-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and one hour before show times.
