Seven super foods for your heart

Are you looking for new nutritionally-dense foods to incorporate into your diet? Give the following foods a try in honor of American Heart Month:
  • Oatmeal — A review of 67 studies showed that diets high in soluble fiber, such as steel-cut oats, decreased total and bad (LDL) cholesterol.
  • Salmon — This oily fish is high in omega-3 fatty acids which help protect the heart.
  • Nuts — Walnuts, almonds and macadamia nuts contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that have the ability to reduce LDL cholesterol. Nuts are also the best plant-based sources of omega-3 fatty acids.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil — Consider tossing some olive oil onto your salad or pasta to increase heart-healthy monounsaturated fat intake.
  • Berries — These have the ability to reduce build-up LDL cholesterol and lower inflammation in the body.
  • Spinach — This and other leafy greens like kale and spinach are especially high in folate. Folate decreases circulating homocysteine, a risk factor for cardiovascular disease.
  • Dark chocolate — Dark chocolate contains flavonoids called polyphenols that benefit the heart by assisting in blood pressure regulation, clotting and reducing inflammation.
Eating these food items along with 30 minutes of exercise five days a week will help keep your ticker going strong.
