This education conference is free and open to all K4-12 instructors and administrators. With the theme “Culturally Responsive Teaching,” the conference will run from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. at Valhalla, Cartwright Center-Gunning Addition. Register by Friday, Oct. 21, at www.uwlax.edu/pse. Clark, who has been featured on the “Today” show, CNN and Oprah, used book royalties to convert an old warehouse in a poor neighborhood in Atlanta, Georgia, into The Ron Clark Academy. The school offers a unique experience described by students as “fun,” “energetic” and “magical.” The conference will also include a keynote presentation from Sharroky Hollie, who holds a doctorate degree and is an experienced educator, author and executive director of the Center for Culturally Responsive Teaching and Learning, based in Los Angeles. Hollie, who is author of “Strategies for Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Teaching and Learning,” will present on culturally-responsive teaching focused on culture and instructional benefits. The two-day conference includes numerous speakers, including UWL faculty and staff. Find out more online at www.uwlax.edu/pse. During the conference, activists from two organizations from Ferguson, Missouri, “Lost Voices” and “Chosen for Change,” will provide a “State of Ferguson” update on what has happened since Michael Brown’s death to heal and rebuild a community as it simultaneously continues to fight for justice. Register on the Professional Studies in Education website by Friday, Oct. 21, at www.uwlax.edu/pse. Meals are not included, but may be purchased via the website.
